The Grand Canyon women's golf team heads to the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona. The field will play 36 holes on Monday and a final 18 holes on Tuesday.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- PAIR OF WINS: GCU won a pair of tournaments in March. The Lopes captured the GCU Invitational (March 1-2) by 12 shots. GCU defeated Gonzaga in a playoff to capture the team title at the 20-team Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Arizona.
- RANKINGS: GCU enters the week ranked at No. 89 nationally. The top-ranked WAC program continues to be New Mexico State (76). Seattle U (120) is the third highest ranked WAC program.
- WAC HONORS: A trio of Lopes have earned WAC Golfer of the Week honors. Senior Siripatsorn Patchana (Feb. 17), sophomore Carmen Belmonte (March 17) and junior Payton Fehringer (March 24) have won the weekly award for GCU.
COWGIRL CLASSIC
The last Cowgirl Classic was played in 2019. UTEP (883 strokes) won a close event with Santa Clara (884) and New Mexico State (885). GCU last played in the Cowgirl Classic in the spring of 2017. Senior Carolina Sandstrom is the only current Lopes player who competed in the event.Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Lopes are coming off an impressive March, when the team won at the GCU Invitational and the Red Rocks Invitational. The Lopes also played well at the Clover Cup, which featured nationally ranked programs.
WHAT'S NEXT
Up next for the Lopes is the Branch Law Firm/Dick Maguire Invitational, hosted by New Mexico in Albuquerque.Â
