The Grand Canyon track and field teams will host the GCU Antelope Invitational on Saturday at the GCU track.
The meet will begin at 1 p.m. with javelin and conclude with the 10,000-meter race, which will start at 10:20 p.m. The Lopes hosted their first meet ever in late January, and this upcoming meet will be their third hosted meet of the year.Â
"We are excited to be competing at home this weekend to break more school records and have a lot more WAC-leading performances," GCU head coach
Tom Flood said.Â
The Lopes have been on a roll since recently opening their outdoor season. In two outdoor meets, the Lopes set eight new school records and multiple top performances in the WAC.Â
With meets in Tucson and San Diego, GCU junior
Jorden Okyere won two straight Men's WAC Field Athlete of the Week awards, broke three school records and posted season-best WAC throws in discus and hammer. Okyere will compete in his hometown of Phoenix as a Lope for the third time ever on Saturday and is expected to come through with more significant marks.Â
"We will be hosting some of the top teams in the NCAAs (Colorado, Arizona, Northern Arizona, Arizona State) and will have a large group of very talented post-collegiate athletes competing on Saturday, as well," Flood said.
Lopes senior
Elizabeth Balsan is coming off last weekend's school record-breaking performance in the 5,000-meter race of 16 minutes, 53.94 seconds at the Aztec Invitational. Balsan will compete in the 10,000-meter race with teammate
Erika Wallace on Saturday.Â
Also competing this weekend is senior
Paige Hildebrandt, who broke the school record in the 1,500-meter race at the Aztec Invitational with a time of 4:24.48. Hildebrandt will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the first time this season. Hildebrandt is the event's school record holder (10:34.29) from her performance at the 2018 Mt. SAC Relays.Â
GCU sophomore
