The Grand Canyon women's tennis team capped off the week with a 5-2 win over Idaho State at the GCU Tennis Facility on Senior Day.
Â
The Lopes (6-7) honored four senior –
Emilia Occhipinti,
Joely Lomas,
Autum Prudhomme and
Mathilde Lirzin – before the match and it was the seniors who led the Lopes to a 5-2 victory in their final home match of their careers.
Â
In doubles GCU jumped out to a 1-0 lead over Idaho State (7-6) thanks to wins at the bottom two courts. Lomas and freshman
Taylor Andersen won their sixth match in a row with a 6-2 win to kick off the match. Likewise senior duo Occhipinti and Prudhomme clinched the point for their eighth win of the season with a 6-1 win.
Natasha Puehse and
Jana Weiss dropped their match 3-6 after the point had been clinched.
Â
Puehse would bounce back from the doubles loss with a dominate win 6-0, 6-2 win in singles at No. 1 for her sixth win in a row and team leading ninth win of the season. That wasn't the only court the Lopes got out to a strong start in as Andersen moved up to No. 5 for the first time since mid-February and won easily over ISU's Adriene Pavek 6-1, 6-0 to push the Lopes to a 3-0 lead on the brink of a team win.
Â
Fittingly it was Occhipinti, the fifth year senior for the Lopes, who returned to Phoenix with an extra year of eligibility after last year's COVID shutdown to clinch the team win. The Ragusa, Italy native won her first set 6-0 over the Bengals' Hana Cho but had to fight in the second. Occhipinti faced 3-4 and 4-5 deficits before forcing a 6-6 tiebreaker. Occhipinti would dominate the tiebreaker winning 7-6 (7-3) and became only the eighth Lope all-time to reach 50 career singles wins.
Â
Weiss would wrap up her fifth win in a row moments later at No. 3 with a 7-5, 6-2 win while Idaho State was able to get on the scoreboard with singles wins at Nos. 4 and 6 after the Lopes had already clinched the team win.
Â
The Lopes will enjoy a week off before WAC play resumes in Texas with two matches against UT Rio Grande Valley and Seattle U on April 1 and 2.
