The Grand Canyon women's golf team heads north for this weekend's Red Rocks Invitational, hosted by Northern Arizona in Sedona.
The 20-team field will battle at Oakcreek Country Club with 36 holes on Saturday and a final 18 holes on Sunday. Both days will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. On Saturday, the Lopes will be paired with Georgia Southern, CSU Fullerton and Southern Utah.
Other participating teams include Northern Arizona, Illinois State, Sacramento State, Stephen F. Austin, Weber State, Dixie State, Idaho, Montana, Seattle U, UC Riverside, Wichita State, California Baptist, Gonzaga, Idaho State, Northern Colorado and Utah Valley.
GCU last played in the Red Rocks Invitational during the 2017-18 season, when it finished third with College of Charleston winning with a total of 909 (45 over par). The Lopes finished with a 921 total, six shots behind runner-up Portland State. Current seniors
Alexis Linam (11th place),
Carolina Sandstrom (18th place) and
Siripatsorn Patchana (28th place) all played in the event.
Last weekend, the Lopes competed in Mesa at The Clover Cup, hosted by Arizona State. GCU had periods of great golf, ending the first round in fifth place. While the Lopes dropped back in an 11th-place finish, sophomore
Carmen Belmonte led GCU with a 21st-place finish. She was the second-best individual in the tournament at Longbow Golf Club and was named WAC Golfer of the Week.
Looking ahead, GCU will head to the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on April 5-6 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes in Maricopa.
