Belmonte finishes tied for 21st
MESA, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon women's golf team recorded seven combined birdies on the final two holes to claim 11th place at The Clover Cup, hosted by Arizona State.
The Lopes closed with their second best team score (297 strokes) of the tournament. Going up against their toughest tournament field to date, sophomore Carmen Belmonte led the Lopes with a tie for 21st place finish. Her 219 (3 over par) score was the second best score by an individual in the tournament.
Senior Carolina Sandstrom finished in a tie for 35th place with a 224 total. Her final round 72, was the top GCU round of the day. Despite starting the day with a double bogey, Sandstrom went 2 under par over the final 17 to finish even.
Other GCU final scores were freshman Constanza Guerrero's 74, freshman Lani Luafalealo's 74, senior Siripatsorn Patchana's 77 and freshman Carly Strole's 79.
Arizona State won the team championship with Arizona, UNLV, Clemson and Oklahoma rounding out the top five.
GCU is back in action on March 20-21 at the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz.

Day 2 recap
The Lopes slid to 11th place, just two shots back of TCU. GCU also trails Colorado by six shots.
GCU was led by Belmonte's round of 71 (1 under par). Belmonte enters Sunday's final round in a tie for 11th place. She owns the second best two-round total (143) for players playing as individuals.
Fehringer, also playing as an individual, enters the final round in a tie for 29th place (149). She fired a 75 in second round action.
Other GCU second round scores included Patchana's, Sandstrom's 78, Luafalealo's 78, Strole's 78 and Guerrero's 82.

Day 1 recap
The Lopes ended the day in fifth place with a total of 295 (7 over par). Arizona leads the tournament, followed by UNLV, Houston and Arizona State. GCU cracked the top five by owning a one-shot lead over Oklahoma and Colorado State.
Strole recorded four birdies over her final nine holes to lead the Lopes with an even-par 72. After playing the back nine first, Strole had birdies on hole Nos. 1, 4, 5 and 9 to close out the round.
