SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday with a 4-2 win over Sacramento State on the road.
GCU (1-7) didn't show any signs of rust in its first match in 17 days, taking the doubles point and splitting three of the six singles matches to clinch the win.
In doubles, the Lopes won at the second and third positions to take the point and the early 1-0 lead.
Justin Cvitanovic and
Mariano Argote dominated their match at No. 2, wining 6-1.
Freddie Grant and
Loic Van Zeggelaar won 6-3 at No. 3. Senior
Valentin Lang and freshman
Jiri Novak at No. 1 had their match abandoned with the GCU pair leading 5-4 and on the brink of clinching the match.
The Lopes maintained their advantage in singles taking four of the six first sets. The Hornets (1-3) tied the match up with a 6-1, 6-3 win over
Wolmar Boris-Moller at No. 5, but Novak would respond for the Lopes with a straight set win at No. 4 to regain the lead.
Again, Sacramento State would pull the match even with a straight set win by Mark Keki at No 2, but the Lopes would control the final few matches. Argote was in a battle in his match at No. 3. The sophomore from California won the first set in a 7-4 tiebreaker and then carried that momentum to a 6-3 second set win.
Leading 3-2, the Lopes found their closer in senior leader Lang. The Frenchman won his 45th singles match in his GCU career with a 6-3, 6-4 win over the Hornets' Hermont Legaspi.
Freshman
Jonathan Da Silva's match was left unfinished with Silva nearly able to clinch the match leading 6-2, 4-6, 5-2.
The Lopes will face New Mexico on Feb. 24 in the home opener at the GCU Tennis Facility at 12 p.m.
