The Grand Canyon track and field team will compete at the Air Force Collegiate Open on Friday at the Cadet Field House in Colorado. The meet will begin at 9 a.m. with the throws and jumps teams starting off.
"I'm excited for our student-athletes, in these crazy times, to have a chance to actually compete in an indoor meet this season," GCU head coach
Tom Flood said.Â
The Air Force Collegiate Open will be the only official indoor meet that the Lopes will compete in this season.
The men's team will compete in its first indoor meet since securing its fifth straight WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships title in March 2020. The team has added to its powerhouse, including freshman
Miles Kruse and
Gabriel Binion, and sophomore
Jan Kral. Some of the returnees to the men's team are juniors
Kyle DeMoica,
Adam Knuff and
Jorden Okyere, as well as seniors
David Kolar,
Ivan Zaharchenko and
Josh Onwordi.Â
"This meet will give some of our athletes the opportunity to qualify for the always tough NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships," Flood said. "It will give others the chance to compete as we prepare for the outdoor season."Â
On the women's side, 2020 WAC indoor pole vault champion
Alyson Schwartz and runner-up
Madelyn Lundberg will compete head to head. The senior teammates set school records as they pole vaulted 4.16 meters at the 2020 WAC Indoor Championships.Â
Also competing on the women's team are senior
Alexa Hokanson, juniors
Samaria McDonald and
Kennedy Quarles, and sophomore
Mia Corners.
"We are taking a small number of very talented athletes to the Air Force Academy's wonderful indoor facility," Flood said. "The Air Force staff always hosts extremely competitive and well-run track and field meets. This year will be no different, and we are always grateful to them for including us."Â
Live results and
video coverage will be provided at this meet.Â
