CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Grand Canyon men's golf team finished seventh Tuesday in the 15-team Oregon State Invitational at Trysting Tree Golf Club. Out of four participating WAC teams, the Lopes finished only behind Seattle U by five strokes.
The Lopes put two players in the top 30 of the three-round event. Freshman
Sam Murphy totaled the best score for GCU, as he finished in 17th at 2 over par. The Galway, Ireland, native finished his best round Tuesday, when he wrapped up the suspended round two in 1 under par. Murphy totaled 11 birdies in the tournament.
Junior teammate
Matthew Braley tied for 24th after shooting 5 over par, including a 1-under-par second round. He tallied a team-high 12 birdies, two off the tournament best.
Lopes graduate student
Jacob Lackey started out the invitational Monday with his best round of 1 over par and opened Tuesday's third round with 15 consecutive pars. Lackey followed with back-to-back rounds of 3 over par to finish tied for 33rd.
Italy native
Matteo Cristoni closed on a high note Tuesday, shooting 1 under par for one of the tournament's 10 best third-round scores. He jumped 23 spots and tie for 56th.
The Lopes' invitational entry was rounded out by graduate student
Zac Owens, who also shot his best tournament round in the second round. He also averaged two birdies per round.
GCU is back in action on Oct. 25-26 in Lihue, Kaua'i, Hawaii, for the Hoakalei CC Invitational.
