The Grand Canyon swimming and diving program got its first taste of fall competition on Saturday at the annual Purple vs. Black Pentathlon.
"I think this was a good first showing for our athletes," GCU head coach
Steve Schaffer said. "The times are generally what I would expect for this early on, coming off a long COVID-forced break, but I really liked the team energy and thought everyone competed very well. I was very impressed with how well a lot of our new athletes placed against our returners. It's a very good beginning."
An intense draft over a Zoom video conference split the Lopes into a pair of squads. Team Black was led by associate head coach
Chris O'Linger while Schaffer led Team Purple.
Upon arrival at the Edward A. Reese Aquatic Center, the Lopes began putting on eye black and uniforms to rally their teammates.
For Team Purple, the winners were senior
Alyssa Christianson, junior
Alonso Carazo Barbero, junior
Emily Muteti, sophomore
Amir Haviv and senior diver
Tasmin Stewart. Christianson and Carazo Barbero won the pentathlons that included the 200-yard intermediate medley, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle. Muteti and Haviv won the pentathlons that included the 100 IM, 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle).
Team Black's winners were junior
Samuel McKenzie (25, 50, 100, 200 and 500 freestyles) and freshman diver
Reece Robles.
The team competition was close throughout the day but Team Purple's victory was decided by a fun relay with the divers.
