IRVINE, Calif. — The Grand Canyon women's tennis team won its second match in a row with a 4-1 comeback win over UC Irvine on Saturday.
The Lopes (2-3) dropped the doubles point but came back strong in singles to take the first dual match of the weekend road trip.
In doubles, UC Irvine (1-2) took the point with wins at the bottom two positions. GCU juniors
Ludovica Infantino and
Autum Prudhomme lost 6-3 at No. 3 while Lopes freshman
Natasha Puehse and sophomore
Jana Weiss fell 6-2 at No. 2 to give the Anteaters an early 1-0 lead despite GCU seniors
Emilia Occhipinti and
Celina Buhr leading 5-4 at No. 1 when the doubles point was decided.
In singles, the Lopes rallied by winning five of the first sets. GCU junior
Martina Lo Pumo continued her strong play with her third straight win at No. 6, winning 6-4, 6-4 to jump-start the comeback. Puehse followed with a three-set win, after dropping the first set, at No. 2 to give the Lopes the lead.
Occhipinti snapped her four-match losing streak with a hard-fought 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 1 to push the Lopes lead to 3-1. The match was clinched by Infantino at No. 5, where she won 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Buhr and Weiss' matches were stopped in the third set at Nos. 3 and 4.
The Lopes will wrap up the trip Sunday against Nevada in Irvine. The match will start at 11 a.m. (Phoenix time).
