COTO DE CAZA, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's golf team finished in third place at the Orange County Collegiate Classic on Tuesday with junior
Reece Nilsen taking fifth place in his Lopes debut.
GCU fell to seventh place during final-round action of the 17-team tournament but rallied to finish at 895 behind co-champions CSU Fullerton and San Francisco at 876.
Medalist honors went to Fullerton's Derek Castillo at 8 under par. Only two golfers in the field finished under par.
Nilsen made his GCU and Division I debut by carding a 2-over-par tournament. He shook off a double bogey to open Tuesday's final round by carding birdies on five of his next 10 holes. Only Castillo's 17 birdies topped Nilsen's 13 birdies in the 93-player field
Lopes senior
Jake Chanen also placed in the top 10 with a tie for ninth place at 6 over par (222). He birdied five of his final 10 holes.
Other GCU results included senior
Trevor Lampson at 223 in a tie for 19th place, senior
Michael Salazar at 239 and senior
T.J. Nolan at 243.
GCU is back in action at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Feb. 20-22 in Lihue, Hawaii.
Day 1 recap
With 36 holes scheduled, the 17-team field finished about 14 holes of second-round action Monday before play was suspended due to darkness.
The Lopes posted a 21-over score to trail fourth-place California Baptist by one shot. San Francisco leads the tournament at 7 over par.
Lampson, Chanen and Nilsen were tied for 12th place to lead the Lopes. Nilsen fired a first-round 71, which put him in a tie for sixth place at the time.
Other first-round scores included Lampson (75), Chanen (77),
Nolan (79) and Salazar (86). The field average for the first round was 77.88.
