Lopes move up on final day in Hawaii
LIHUE, Hawaii ‑ The Grand Canyon men's golf team finished on a strong note, moving up to 14th-place on the final day of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate.
The Lopes shot 6 under par as a team on the final day to finish in a tie with Santa Clara and ahead of a few higher ranked programs in the 20-team field.
Seniors Jake Chanen and Michael Salazar, along with sophomore Matthew Braley each fired under par rounds on the final day. Salazar finished with a 69, followed by Chanen and Braley with 70s.
For the tournament, Salazar led the Lopes, finishing in 27th-place with an even-par total of 216. Braley finished in a tie for 47th-place with a 220 total.
Other GCU scores included senior Trevor Lampson (221), Chanen (225) and junior Reece Nilsen (229). Senior T.J. Nolan played as an individual and finished with a 219.
No. 10 Texas A&M won the tournament over No. 40 New Mexico and No. 15 BYU.
GCU is back in action on March 13-14 when it hosts the GCU Invitational.
Day 2 recap
GCU shot a second-round score of 299 (11 over par) for a two-round total of 597. The Lopes will begin Saturday's final round in a tie for 18th place at Wailua Golf Club.
Lopes seniors Lampson and Nolan were in a tie for 52nd place with a 148 total that is followed by Braley (150), Nilsen (153) and Chanen (155).
No. 10 Texas A&M leads the tournament's loaded field with No. 15 BYU in second and No. 40 New Mexico in third.
