The Grand Canyon women's swimming team opened the season with strong results but fell to Arizona 1,094-668 on Friday.
"This was a good start to our competitive season," GCU head coach
Steve Schaffer said. "Both the men and the women really exceeded my expectations for this meet. They raced well and put up very solid times for this point in our training. It's a very different year with COVID making it impossible for many of our swimmers to train over the summer, and others missing out on training this season due to travel restrictions and illness. They all have shown great resilience as we adapt to the changing reality we find ourselves in. I am very proud of them."
Junior
Emily Muteti notched the top showing for the Lopes over the two-day event. Muteti won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.44 seconds.
"It was great to seem Emily swim so well," Schaffer said. "She has been training as well as I have ever seen and it is paying off. Her 50 free and 100 breast times were lifetime bests and winning the 100 fly against a team as strong as Arizona is really bigtime."

Day 2
The final day began with the 200 medley relay team (Edwards, Muteti, Mayer and Banic) taking fourth with a time of 1:43.58.
Vindiola was the top finisher in the 1,650 free with a time of 17:24.45, while Edwards finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.56.

Claire Banic,

Madeline Vindiola all swam very well."
