The Grand Canyon track and field team begins its indoor season Friday in Flagstaff, Arizona, at the Northern Arizona Friday Night Duels.
The Lopes are looking to become the second program to win five consecutive WAC indoor titles in men's and women's team competitions simultaneously. BYU was the first to five-peat in the conference from 1995 to 1999 and the Lopes are coming off four consecutive men's and women's WAC indoor championships.
"We all are very excited for this season to begin, as we've had outstanding practices this fall in all event areas," Lopes head coach
Tom Flood said.
GCU will take on Arizona's three other Division I programs — Arizona, Arizona State and NAU — as well as UNLV to round out the solid competition that kicks off the indoor season.
"We again will rely on our veterans' leadership, but we have very young teams this year," Flood said.
GCU returns four WAC indoor individual champions: sophomore
Trey Johnson (long jump), junior
Alexa Hokanson (800 meters), junior
Alyson Schwartz (pole vault) and senior
Grant Carpenter (heptathlon). Hokanson broke the GCU indoor school record for the 800 to win the WAC title with a time of 2 minutes, 8.81 seconds. Carpenter won back-to-back heptathlon titles.
GCU also brings in new talent with freshman distance runner
Rylan Stubbs, who recently finished his cross country season at NCAA West Regionals, and a big group of freshmen and transfers that should make an immediate impact.
"As always with our first indoor meet, we will try and shake off a little holiday rust and begin our run to defend our team WAC titles in Nampa, Idaho, this year," Flood said. "If both teams stay healthy and hungry, we will have an excellent chance for both teams to be standing on the top of the podium again this year."
