FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon track and field team started its season on a high note with sophomore Jorden Okyere breaking a school record in weight throw at the Friday Night Duels.
"Overall, I'm very pleased with the results from our first meet," GCU head coach Tom Flood said. "It was nice to see our athletes compete in their GCU uniforms and shake off some holiday rust."

Okyere, from Phoenix Arcadia High, broke the school record with a weight throw of 17.49 meters on his fourth attempt at Walkup Skydome to take third place. He also placed sixth in shot put with a distance of 15.82 meters.
Lopes junior Josh Onwordi took third in the long jump (7.03 meters) and the high jump (1.98 meters).
Junior jumper Aleksandris Eglitis finished sixth place in the pole vault, clearing 5 meters.
Senior Guillermo Alcala-Rendon and junior David Kolar crossed the finish line within a hair of each other for second and third place in the 200-meter dash at 21.884 and 21.886 seconds, respectively.
"We will get back to work on Monday to get even better and it will be deja vu all over again next weekend."
The Lopes will return to Flagstaff on Friday to compete in the Lumberjack Team Challenge at 2 p.m.
