The Grand Canyon track and field team will travel to Albuquerque for the first time this season on Friday and compete into Saturday at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational at 4 p.m.
The Lopes will go to Albuquerque, New Mexico, three times this season, including the NCAA Indoor Championship and the USA National Indoor Championship.
For the first time this season, the Lopes will have most of the team competing to create higher expectations for team performances. Last year at the same meet, the GCU men's team placed first and the women's team took second.
GCU will be competing at the lowest elevation of the season at approximately 5,000 feet.
At the first two-day meet of the season, WAC Men's Athlete of the Week
Trey Johnson is expected to maintain the strong showing he had at last weekend's meet. Last year, Johnson won the long jump in his collegiate debut in Albuquerque with a leap of 7.37 meters on his first attempt.
In addition, strong marks from junior pole vaulters
Madelyn Lundberg and
Alyson Schwartz are expected to continue from their performances last week.
The Lopes are eager to have the distance runners compete this week after not attending last weekend's meet. Redshirt freshman
Jacob Lewis and junior
Paige Hildebrandt opened the season with fifth-place finishes.
