The Grand Canyon men's tennis team swept this season's first WAC Players of the Week honors with senior
Lorenzo Fucile winning in singles and in doubles with partner freshman
Can Franke.
Â
Despite the Lopes losing the first two matches of the year, Fucile started a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles, where Franke made his collegiate debut.
Â
In doubles, the GCU No. 1 pair defeated Weber State's Sergiu Bucur and Roko Savin 6-4 on Saturday before taking down Utah State's Arthur Serafim and Cezary Walkusz 6-2 on Sunday.
Â
In singles, Fucile is coming off a 16-9 record honor as WAC Player of the Year honors and an All-WAC first-team pick for singles. Against the Wildcats, Fucile took down Bucur 6-3, 6-1 in a quick No. 1 match before going to three sets to defeat Utah State's Kris Van Wyk 6-7, 7-6, 1-0 (10-7).
Â
This is already the third WAC award the Lopes have won this season. In the fall,
Valentin Lang and
Jakub Novak won Doubles Players of the Month for October and freshman
Julian Mueller earned Singles Player of the Month honors in November.
Â
Fucile, Franke and the Lopes travel to No. 25 Arizona State on Thursday at 3 p.m., along with hosting UC Riverside on Saturday at 3 p.m.
