TUCSON, Ariz. — The Grand Canyon track and field team sent seven multi-event athletes to the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson on Thursday and Friday. Junior
Niki Xydona broke the school record in her first heptathlon in a GCU uniform.
Xydona entered the season with a personal record score of 4,962 in the heptathlon from her days at Utah State. The junior broke her personal best score and the school record with a 4,985 to finish 11th in an extremely talented field of heptathletes.
The junior set personal-best marks in the 100-meter hurdles, the 200-meter dash and the 800-meter run.
Junior
Grant Carpenter won four events in the decathlon but a disqualification in the 400-meter and a no-height in the pole vault limited the WAC defending champion to 5,418 points. Carpenter won every throwing event and the high jump.
Freshman
James Koch had a GCU-high 5,616 points in his first decathlon as a Lope. The freshman finished third in the 100-meter dash and second in the javelin on pace to his point total.
The Lopes will send the full team to the UC San Diego Triton Invitational in San Diego, Calif., April 12-13.
