The Grand Canyon track and field team has a short turnaround after a momentous weekend in San Diego. The Lopes return to California to compete Wednesday through Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational Wednesday, where the Lopes will see the largest competition fields of the season.

At a large meet on Saturday, GCU athletes broke three school records at the Triton Invitational where more than 25 personal records were set.

Jesse Newman is coming off a school record throw of 71.57 meters, which ranks 10th in the nation and earned a WAC Field Athlete of the Week honor.

Brendan Wagler will kick things off for the Lopes at Azusa Pacific with the men's 10,000-meter run on Wednesday, followed by senior
Kenzie Fitzgerald running in the women's 10,000.

On Thursday, more of the distance crew will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000 meters.

Junior
Paige Hildebrandt, coming off a school record in the 1,500-meter run at the Triton Invitational last Saturday, will run in the 3,000 steeplechase, an event for which she also holds a program-best time.

There will be 16 heats of the 5,000 at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Thursday, starting at 5:40 p.m. with the final heat starting at 10:40 p.m.

Friday will welcome the rest of the team to competition with every field event and the remainder of the running events.

The 400-meter relay, women's javelin, discus and pole vault will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday.

The Lopes have posted school record marks in 21 straight meets spanning over more than a full calendar year. The last time the Lopes did not break or tie a GCU record was the last week of March in 2018 at the Texas Relays and Bobcat Invitational.
