SAN DIEGO – The Grand Canyon track and field team destroyed a trio of school records at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Saturday to push the program streak of school records to 21 straight meets.
The day started with a school record from junior
Paige Hildebrandt in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 33.1 seconds. The junior broke her own previous school record by about a second.
Hildebrandt wasn't the only record breaker for long as freshman
Moataz Hassan broke his program best in the shot put by 2 centimeters to move the new record to 16.2 meters.
Later in the afternoon, junior
Jesse Newman cracked a big one in the javelin, inciting a roar from himself and his teammates. Newman threw 71.57 meters to win the event, which included a 2018 NCAA All-American. The junior's 71.57-meter mark ranks 10th in the country and sixth on the NCAA West Preliminary Round qualifying list.
There were other big performances from Lopes, even though they didn't break school records.
The Lopes went one-two among collegiate athletes in the men's long jump. Senior
Adrian King jumped 7.51 meters, while redshirt freshman
Trey Johnson jumped 7.64 meters. King's 7.51-meter leap is one centimeter off his 2018 season best at the WAC Championships with a 3.0 m/s wind that sent him to the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
In the 800-meter run, senior
Daniel Flores came within 0.44 seconds of tying the school record. Flores won the event with a 1:50.59 personal record and the second-best time in GCU history. The event win for Flores is his first big-meet win of his GCU career. Freshman
Landon Rast ran a personal record of 1:54.02, which ranks fifth in the WAC.
Senior
Sarah Root had a big personal record with a 6.0-meter effort in the long jump. This is the second time that Root has set a personal best at the Triton Invitational in her career and ties her for 38th in the West.
Junior hurdler
Symone Wright-Flowers set a personal record in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:01.67 and sophomore
Naudia Dawson trimmed time off her 100-meter dash with an 11.91 finish.
The Lopes will return to California on April 17-19 for the Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific.
