The Grand Canyon women's tennis team began the week with a win over Portland at home on Monday, and will look to end the week in similar fashion on the road. The Lopes will travel to Santa Clara (3-6) on Saturday followed by San Jose State (4-2) on Saturday.
The Lopes (4-7) defeated Portland 4-3 on Monday, thanks to good performances up and down both the singles and doubles lineup. For the second straight match the Lopes took the doubles point winning at Nos. 1 and 3.
In singles Portland responded taking four first sets, but GCU was able to pull out wins at Nos. 4 and 2. After two wins by the Pilots it all came down to No. 1, where
Emilia Occhipinti clinched the match in a third set tiebreaker.
GCU and Santa Clara haven't met since 1992, when the Lopes won 6-0 in Hawaii. This will be the first time the Lopes play the Broncos in a true road match since 1989.
GCU and San Jose State played each other in 2018, a 4-2 neutral site win for the Spartans in Fullerton, Calif. This will be the first time ever the Lopes will travel to San Jose State.
