The Grand Canyon track and field team heads to the 41st Annual Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State Friday and Saturday with four new school records and an athlete ranked in the top 10 in the country.
The Lopes will get to see big-name competition again as the Lopes will compete against BYU, Arizona, Air Force, Utah, Kansas State and storied Oregon.
Junior
Paige Hildebrandt broke her own school record in the 1,500-meters on last Friday, joining sophomore
Alexa Hokanson in breaking school records on the track. Hokanson broke her own school record in the 800-meters, as well.
Freshman
Jorden Okyere had an unforgettable weekend, breaking two school records on his way into GCU history books. The freshman broke the discus record on the first day of competition and broke the shot put record to end the weekend.
Junior
Jesse Newman, coming off an All-American second team honor in 2018, backed up his school record throw from June of 2018 with a 68-plus meter throw to begin 2019. The mark ranks 10th in the country and the mark would have finished well inside the descending order list that makes the NCAA West Preliminary Round last year.
The Lopes get started Friday morning at 8 a.m. with the men's hammer throw.
