The Grand Canyon women's tennis team will close out the longest homestand of the season on Sunday when it welcomes Colorado State (1-1) to GCU Tennis Facility for the first time.
The Lopes (2-3) split the last four matches at home, defeating Drake and Southern Utah and falling to Nevada and Cal State Fullerton. After this weekend's matchup against the Rams, the Lopes will be on the road for the next two weeks before coming back home on Feb. 24 against Sacramento State.
GCU has seen great production from the top of the singles and doubles lineups. Junior
Emilia Occhipinti has been named WAC Player of the Week four straight times, twice in singles and twice in doubles with partner
Celina Buhr. At No. 1 singles, the junior from Ragusa, Italy, has a team-leading 4-1 record and teams with Buhr to lead the team in doubles wins at 3-2.
The Lopes also has seen production form
Celia Morel at the No. 4 singles position. In her first season with GCU, Morel has a 3-2 record and won a match in doubles with partner
Autum Prudhomme at No. 3. Prudhomme has played well in singles, winning two matches at No. 6.
GCU owns a 2-0 record against Colorado State with shutout wins coming in a neutral-site match in Reno, Nev., in 2014 and on the road in Fort Collins, Colo., in 2016.
This season, the Rams are 1-1 after defeating Illinois-Chicago and falling at Wisconsin in Madison on Jan. 27. The team is in the midst of an eight-match road trip to start the season and they won't play their first home match until March 2. The Rams will also face WAC opponent New Mexico State on Feb. 16.
Last season, Colorado State finished 11-12 overall and 1-6 in the Mountain West, losing to Boise State in the conference tournament. During the fall season, the Rams competed well with four players winning 10 singles matches and six players recording winning singles records.
