The Grand Canyon women's tennis team ended a lengthy five match homestand with a 6-1 loss to Colorado State on Sunday. The Rams jumped out early winning the doubles point and won the first three singles matches to take the team win.
"It was a tough loss for the girls today,"head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "Unfortunately the score wasn't indicative of close it was. Colorado State played well but the girls fought, all six of them."
In doubles the Rams took the point winning at Nos. 2 and 3.
Martina Lo Pumo and
Ludovica Infantino lost 6-2 and
Celia Morel and Autumn Prudhomme lost 6-4.
Emilia Occhipinti and
Celina Buhr's match at No. 1 was unfinished at 5-3.
Heading into singles Colorado State (2-1) won the first three singles matches to take the team win. Prudhomme fell at No. 6 in straights sets and Morel lost her first match after moving up in the lineup to No. 3. Occhipinti saw her four-match winning streak end as the Rams earned their fourth point at No. 1.
Lo Pumo broke through at No. 2 winning a long three set match to get the Lopes on the board winning 7-6, 2-6, 10-7. The Rams would wrap up the match winning at Nos. 5 and 4 in three sets.
"We're fighting hard, so we certainly don't like to lose any more than anyone else," Prudhomme added. "But it was a good loss in a sense that everyone was battling, and when they do that they are reinforcing important competitive habits. So if we keep that up and if they go out and battle it like that they will keep getting better and sharpening their competing skills and we'll be better when get to the conference matches and the conference tournament by the end of the season."
The Lopes will travel to Utah State and Weber State next week as they hit the road for the first time since Jan. 12.
