The Grand Canyon women's tennis team will kick off a four-match road trip this weekend when it plays at Utah State (2-4) and Weber State (5-3) on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
The trip marks the first time the Lopes will play away from the GCU Tennis Facility since the Jan. 20 season opener against Texas A&M.
The Lopes (2-4) started their recent five-match homestand with two come-from-behind wins against Drake and Southern Utah. The team then faltered in three consecutive matches against Nevada, Cal State Fullerton and Colorado State.
The schedule does not get any easier. On the following weekend, the Lopes will head to Tucson for a neutral-site match against Liberty on Feb. 22 and then play Arizona on Feb. 23 before their next home match against Sacramento State on Feb. 23.
The Lopes are led by junior
Emilia Occhipinti, who leads the team in singles wins and doubles wins from the No. 1 positions. Junior
Celia Morel is second with three singles wins at the Nos. 3 and 4 positions. Junior
Celina Buhr has paired with Occhipinti at No. 1 doubles and earned a pair of wins in singles as well.
The GCU-Utah State matchup goes back to the mid-1990s, when the Lopes won three consecutive matches from 1992 to 1994. Utah State answered with three straight wins from 2016 to 2018. Last year's 4-3 Aggies win marked the first time that the teams met in Phoenix. This season, the Aggies boast wins over Southern Utah and Northern Arizona, while losing to WAC opponent New Mexico State.
The Lopes own a 3-1 record against Weber State with the most recent matchup coming in 2017, a 6-1 road win for GCU. The Lopes also boast wins over Weber State in a neutral-site match in 2014 in Las Vegas and at home in 2011. Weber State's lone win came in 2002 on a 5-4 decision.
Early this season, the Wildcats boast five wins but are 0-2 at home with losses to BYU and Akron. Arizona is 3-0 in neutral-site matchups with wins coming against UTEP and Youngstown State in last weekend's UNLV Tournament in Las Vegas.
