NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Grand Canyon senior golfer
Filip Lundell captured UC Irvine Invitational medalist honors Tuesday with a bogey-free final round of 68 to win by four shots and help the Lopes to a runner-up team finish.
"I am happy to see Filip's hard work pay off," said head coach Mark. Mueller.  "Good to see results from his progress."
In his 54 holes at Big Canyon Country Club, Lundell finished with 14 birdies, including a tourney-high five birdies on the par-4 holes. Only four of the tournament's 59 players finished the under par. Lundell was the only player to record three straight sub-par rounds.
GCU led the tournament after the first round with an impressive 4-under score of 284. The Lopes finished second to CSU Fullerton by 11 shots. GCU (874) held off third-place Santa Clara (879) and fourth-place Washington State (880).
"Overall as a team we played pretty good," said head coach
Mark Mueller. "CSUF played well and we were a good round short of competing with them. This is something to build on for Hawaii next week."
In addition to Lundell taking first,  Lopes junior
Jake Chanen recorded a top-10 finish with a 2-over tournament score of 218. Junior
Michael Salazar finished in 17
th place (222). Junior
Trevor Lampson finished in 25
th place (227) and freshman
Matthew Braley finished in 37
th place (231).
"Jake played well and was a big reason why we got second place," said Mueller. "Salazar was good overall and Trevor and Matt gave us usable rounds."
GCU is back in action at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Lihue, Hawaii, on Feb. 21-23.
