LIHUE, Hawaii – The Grand Canyon men's golf team completed the first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Thursday. Competing in its strongest field of the season with eight top-50 teams, GCU held its own to end the day in ninth place in the 20-team event.
The Lopes were led by a pair of under-par rounds from
Trevor Lampson (70) and
Jake Chanen (70). The duo recorded five birdies apiece and led the Lopes to a 289 (1 over par) team score.
Other GCU scores included
Michael Salazar with a 74,
Matthew Braley at 75 and
Filip Lundell at 77.
BYU leads the tournament with a 280 (8 under) score, followed by Texas A&M (281) and Arizona State (282).
Day 2 of the three-day event will take place Friday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. (Hawaii time).
