Grand Canyon tennis head coach
Greg Prudhomme released a loaded 2020 schedule for a men's team coming off WAC regular-season and tournament championships in 2019.
"We are extremely excited about our schedule this year," Prudhomme said. "The men's schedule is quite simply the strongest we have ever had. This is a reflection of how well the men have been competing and developing over the past few seasons and the respect they have been earning."
The Lopes will face four Power 5 opponents and four NCAA tournament teams, the most in one season since joining Division I, along with hosting a WAC cluster at GCU Tennis Facility in March.
The season will kick off in January with road matches at Utah State, Weber State and Arizona State. The Lopes and Sun Devils played each other last season for the first time since 1987.
On Jan. 18, the Lopes will open a five-match home slate with UC Riverside at 3 p.m. before heading to the Pacific Northwest for their first meeting with Washington since 1986 and a neutral-site match against Cal Poly.
GCU will open February with a home match against San Francisco before hitting the road for the next six matches. In that road trip, the Lopes will head to Stanford on Feb. 7 and to Baylor on Feb. 21. It will be the first time the Lopes face Stanford, a 17-time national champion that produced tennis greats such as the McEnroe brothers.
"We're looking very forward to competing against Stanford and a couple other Pac-12 schools in addition to Baylor," Prudhomme added. "Besides the Power 5 opponents that we are playing, the rest of the schedule is also very tough and will help prepare our guys to attempt a repeat at the conference tournament."
March will conclude with four straight matches at home, welcoming Boise State to the GCU Tennis Facility before the team hosts a WAC cluster on March 27-29 against UT Rio Grande Valley, Chicago State and New Mexico State.
The regular season will conclude in Chicago with neutral-site matches against Kansas City and Seattle U on April 10 and 11. The WAC Tournament will be hosted by the Roos in Kansas City from April 24-26.
