RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Grand Canyon women's swimming and diving team dropped both meetings on Saturday, losing to California Baptist 169-129 and to Wyoming 202-89.
"We were short-handed today and the scores showed it," Lopes head coach
Steve Schaffer said. "I am still very pleased with how the women battled and competed throughout the meet."
The 200-yard medley relay group of Brigit Van Der Degte,
Marina McInelly,
Kyra Forrest and
Diana Jaruseviciute earned points early for the Lopes, taking third with a time of 1 minute, 48.03 seconds.
McInelly was a bright spot for the Lopes, winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.10 and the 200 breaststroke (2:23.11). McInelly also finished fourth in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:47.33.
"McInelly led the fight for our women's team today with impressive wins in the breaststroke events," Schaffer said. "She was by far our best performer on the day. i'm excited to see where she can be come WAC Championships in February."
Roaia Mashaly contributed points for GCU, finishing fourth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.78.
Van Der Vegte placed second in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 59.36. Van Der Vegte also finished sixth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:13.60.
Robyn Edwards placed fourth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.59.
Hannah Barker finished right behind in fifth (2:10.57).
In the 100 butterfly,
Emily Muteti earned a third-place finish with a time of 57.86. Muteti also finished sixth in the 200 butterfly (2:18.88).
The Lopes finished Saturday strong, as Forrest, Jaruseviciute, Muteti and Mashaly finished second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:38.83. Van Der Vegte, Edwards,
Salma Zaitoun and
Maja Uduc finished fourth (3:50.49).
In the 1-meter dive,
Menna El-Midany finished in sixth with 187.70 points.
Tasmin Stewart finished in seventh with 176.35 points. El-Midany finished third in the 3-meter dive with 221.75 points, while Stewart finished in sixth with 208.35 points.
The Lopes head to Provo, Utah, next weekend as they take on BYU. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. (Phoenix time).
