PROVO, Utah — The Grand Canyon women's swimming and diving team fell to BYU on Saturday afternoon, losing to the Cougars 170-101.
"The women swam well," Lopes head coach
Steve Schaffer said. "We battled some adversity with travel, but it was good to see improvements in our times and effort over last week's meet."
In her GCU debut, freshman
Agueda Cons-Gestido shined. The native of Spain collected two individual victories in the 500-yard freestyle (5 minutes, 15.46 seconds) and the 1000 freestyle (10:45.55). Cons-Gestido also finished fourth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:59.93.
Cons-Gestido continued to add to her impressive first meet for the Lopes, contributing to a first-place finish with
Karolina Dyrda,
Robyn Edwards and
Salma Zaitoun in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a winning time of 1:42.26.
"Our new arrival Agueda Gestido-Cons got to swim her first NCAA event and won the 1000 freestyle," Schaffer said. "She is very talented and it will be fun to watch how she improves as she gets used to swimming yard events and the NCAA format."
Roaia Mashaly collected a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.80. Mashaly also finished fourth in the 100 freestyle (53.07).
In the 100 backstroke,
Brigit Van Der Vegte finished third with a time of 59.17 and fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:09.12).
Edwards earned a third-place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.36.
Hannah Barker followed finishing fourth in 2:09.10.
Menna El-Midany won the 3-meter dive with 274.35 points while finishing sixth in the 1-meter dive (240.25).
Tasmin Stewart finished seventh in the 1-meter dive with 216.95 points and finished fifth in the 3-meter dive (233.85).
The Lopes are back in action on Jan. 26 when they head to Moscow, Idaho, to face Idaho and Simon Fraser.
