History will be made this weekend as the Lopes send the most qualifying athletes in program history to the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays. GCU will be represented by 37 student-athletes and two relay teams, one of the largest teams in attendance in Torrance, California.
"We are really looking forward to being back at the Mt. SAC Relays this year," head coach
Tom Flood said. "This meet will give our athletes that qualified for the meet a wonderful opportunity to compete against the top collegiate athletes in the country."
Three of the four reigning Western Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week winners will compete in Torrance.
Ryan Girk will run in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and in the 4x100-meter relay.
Mariah Montoya will run in the 10,000-meter race, the first time the senior has run that distance this season, including during the cross country season.
Tarasue Barnett will throw in the Elite section of the women's discus; the senior currently sits at sixth in the nation in the event.
Jesse Newman will not throw the javelin as the Mt. SAC Relays does not have a javelin event.
Coming off a school record in the 1,500-meter race,
Paige Hildebrandt will run in the 1,500 as well as the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Hildebrandt set the school record in the 1,500 at the UCSD Triton Invite April 14 with her time of 4:35.00, as the sophomore finished fourth in the event. Hildebrandt also holds the 2018 season record for the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her 10:46.59 finish at the Aztec Invite.
The school record holder and the reigning WAC Indoor 400-meter champion,
Isaac Allanarem, will race the 400 in Torrance. The senior ran a blistering 46.90 at the Aztec Invite in March.
Josh Hamberlin, the hammer throw school record holder, will also throw at the Mt. SAC Relays. Hamberlin crushed the school record by over seven meters with his throw of 61.25 meters at the Willie Williams Invite in Tucson.
"The meet environment should help produce some of our best times and marks this season," Flood said.
The first event, the hammer throw, is set to begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 19. The first running event is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. PST.
