The first Grand Canyon athlete to compete at an NCAA Division I Championship is senior pole vaulter
Scott Marshall. The school record holder's top pole vault is tied for ninth in the nation and he will look to be GCU's first All-American at the Division I level this weekend.
Marshall sat at 13th in the nation before the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships and needed to crack the top 16 to punch his ticket to College Station, Texas, the site of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday.
If Marshall had not jumped the 5.51-meter mark that he did at the WAC Championships, he still would have made the NCAA meet in the final qualifying spot.
"It's going to be a lot of fun," Marshall said. "We put in all the work and we are going to go out and compete. I've waited five years for this and I am so happy that we have come this far."
GCU's track and field team does have a national championship trophy from the Division II era but Marshall is vying to be GCU's first Division I national champion.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for our program to make a mark at the national level, this time at the Division I level," Lopes head coach
Tom Flood said.
Being the first GCU student-athlete to compete for a national title can be nerve-racking, for Marshall, a different sentiment permeates.
"I'm kind of happy it's me," Marshall said. "I'm competitive so I'd like it to be me over someone else. I hope I do the school well."
Marshall will compete Friday at 4:30 p.m. MST with the meet being broadcast live on ESPN.
