PHOENIX – Grand Canyon's first student-athlete to compete in a Division I NCAA Championship very likely could wind up being the track and field team's
Scott Marshall.
The senior pole vaulter ranks 12
th the nation with a season-best vault of 5.48 meters. This weekend, Marshall will attempt to break his school record and improve his placing to insure he will make the NCAA cut. The top 16 pole vaulters of the season will qualify for the NCAA Championship.
"This is a well-deserved honor for Scott," Lopes head coach
Tom Flood said. "He has worked hard to get to this point. This weekend will give him a chance to improve his mark and give himself a better chance to be one of the 16 athletes that go to NCAAs at the end of the season to send himself to Texas. It is great exposure for our program for Scott to be going to nationals and we wish him the best this weekend."
As Marshall travels to Albuquerque, about 20 teammates will make the trip north on I-17 to Flagstaff to compete in the NAU Tune-Up. With one week until the WAC Indoor Championships, the Lopes are looking to create the best possible team to win men's and women's WAC titles again.
"The NAU Tune-Up will give us a clearer picture of who will compete at the WAC Indoor Championships," Flood said. "We have a few people we are keeping our eye on and some athletes that will go up to Flagstaff to stay sharp in the technical events. We are excited for the conference meet and we can't wait to compete for two more titles."
The WAC Indoor Championships will take place Feb. 22-25 in Nampa, Idaho, which is just west of Boise. The women will look to claim their fifth consecutive conference title as the men aim for a third consecutive indoor championship.
