PHOENIX – It has been a busy week of accolades for the track & field program, garnering three WAC Athlete of the Week awards as well as a No. 5 and No. 15 West Region rankings for the men and women, respectively. The busy week is not over as the track and field team returns to New Mexico to compete in the UNM Team Challenge on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
The Lopes will look to build on the three WAC Athlete of the Week awards won by
Scott Marshall,
Ryan Girk and
Kayla Finnegan (Wilson) this past week and set more top-region marks to climb the region rankings this week.
On top of Girk, Marshall and Finnegan's performances, many other Lopes had solid weekends at the MLK Jr Invitational including,
Jennifer Johnson (Rolph),
Madelyn Lundberg who went 4th and 5th in the pole vault with Lundberg claiming a personal record with a jump of 3.77m.
Tope Williams set a personal record in the 200m with a time of 25.37 and freshman
Naudia Dawson also set a personal record in the 200m with a time of 25.76. Freshman
Alexa Hokanson set a personal best in the 400m with a time of 58.84.
Guillermo Alcala Rendon and
Isaac Allanarem ran solid times in the 200m, setting personal records with times of 21.63 and 21.71, respectively. Alcala Rendon's time is good enough for third in the region as of week two of the season.
Andrew Okonkwo jumped 2.02m, a jump of 6' 7.5, half an inch below his personal record set his freshman year.
Marvin Magg threw the shot put 14.00m, a personal record by about 7 inches.
"We look to continue pushing forward and getting better each week,"
Tom Flood said ahead of his second of three trips to Albuquerque this season.
This Saturday's meet will be a double-dual scored meet, slightly different from last week where there were post-collegiate athletes from track clubs and even some Olympians in attendance. The UNM Team Challenge will include host University of New Mexico, New Mexico State, San Diego State, Texas Christian, Texas State, Utah State and Washington State, whose men's team is ranked first in the West Region.
