The Grand Canyon men's golf team heads to Sugar Grove, Illinois for its second fall tournament of the year. GCU heads to the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms, hosted by Northern Illinois on Sept. 24-25.
Last year the Lopes finished seventh of the 12-team Northern Intercollegiate. Illinois, ranked No. 1 in the country at the time of the tourney, won the event while GCU was led by
Matt McClung who finished 11
th overall at the Beverly Country Club course in Chicago.
Vinnie Murphy also played well finishing in 14
th place.
The 2017 Northern Intercollegiate will include a 12-team field. Joining GCU is host NIU, Virginia, Purdue, Michigan, Marquette, Wisconsin, Eastern Kentucky, Louisiana-Monroe, Loyola-Maryland, Iowa State and Illinois State. Players will play 36 holes on Sunday the 24
th and a final 18 holes on Monday the 25
th.
According to last year's golf stat rankings, nearly half the field was in the top-100 (Virginia 12, Iowa St. 37, Purdue 45, Michigan 61, Eastern Kentucky 101).
Last week the Lopes opened the season at the Ram Masters Invitational and finished 12
th in the 19-team field. GCU started strong in seventh-place after the first round, but GCU would drop off a bit during the final two rounds.
Murphy led the Lopes to a 12
th-place individual finish, while McClung finished in 36
th place. It was the first time in the GCU lineup for
Max Sekulic,
TJ Nolan and
Filip Lundell.
