MARICOPA, Ariz. – A pair of sophomore Lopes never cooled off after a hot start in day one of the Cowboy Classic at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes in Maricopa, guiding the Lopes to 19 under and a tied for second placement after round two was halted due to darkness.

Matthew Diehl is tied with three other golfers for the clubhouse lead at 9 under par while classmate
Nixon Lauritzen is right behind him at 8 under in a tie for fifth.
GCU totaled 38 birdies as a squad, tied most with nationally ranked Southern California. The Trojans are the lone team above GCU at 22 under, with the Lopes three back with No. 46 Arkansas State.
The 25-team field consists of five top 50 nationally ranked programs. GCU leads No. 42 San Diego by seven, No. 49 UNLV by eight and No. 45 USF by nine. The Lopes are also one of five Mountain West schools competing in the two-day tournament with UNLV second best of the bunch.
First Round
Diehl and Lauritzen put on a birdie clinic in the first round, combining for 19 birdies put themselves first and second in the standings, respectively. Diehl's first round 64 was one shot shy of the program's single low round, which is held by three golfers, most recently Lauritzen last season.
Diehl totaled 10 birdies, six of which came on the back nine to open the tournament. He birdied holes 13-16 and began his front nine with birdies on the par 5 third and the par 4 fifth.
Lauritzen found similar success on the back nine, tallying five through his first nine holes with three in a row on holes 12-13-14 for a first round 65.
Sophomore
Erik Rengardt shot 1 under, beginning his day with a birdie-bogey start before rallying 16 straight pars. Junior
Gavin O'Neill went even while sophomore Måns Boje shot 4 over.
Second Round
After 15 back nine birdies, the Lopes countered with 11 to open the second round. Diehl once again led that charge with three while the other four Lopes tallied a pair. With darkness stopping play with roughly seven holes left for each golfer, O'Neill's 2 under was the second-round high for the squad that is 5 under in the second round.
GCU and the rest of the field will continue round two tomorrow morning while the third and final round will begin immediately after.
