The Grand Canyon men's and women's track & field teams are set for local meet at Glendale Community College on Friday, April 7. The Lopes will travel less than 10 miles down the road to compete at the GCC Arizona Outdoor Classic.
After last week's Don Kirby Tailwind Invitational limited the Lopes due to weather, GCU head coach
Tom Flood and company added the GCC AZ Outdoor Classic. With the high jump, pole vault and triple jump cancelled in Albuquerque, Grand Canyon decided to withhold most student-athletes for precautionary reasons. The added event will give the Lopes another chance to compete.
During last week's event, the Lopes were able to make the most at throws and hurdles as several Lopes finished first in their prospective events. Josh Hamberlin placed first in the shot put with a mark of 12.72m and
Aaron Burnside took the discus title with a toss of 37.75m. For the women's,
Sasha-Gaye Marston placed first in shot put (13.47m) and discus (48.05m).
At hurdles, the Lopes swept the 100-meter hurdles podium in men's and women's. Facing adverse weather conditions,
Ally Cuddeford led the charge for the women's team with a time of 14.78 seconds.
William Winfield IV finished first for the men's with a time of 14.96 seconds.
With a quick turnaround, the Lopes will look forward to three days in Azusa, Calif. for the California Invitational Combined Events and Bryan Clay Invitational from Wednesday, April 12 – Friday, April 14.
