The Grand Canyon's men's and women's track & field teams are prepared for a couple of meets in Azusa, California. With split squads, the team will compete at the Mt. SAC Relays/California Invitational Combined Events and Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific University from Wednesday, April 12 – Friday, April 14.
After a successful Arizona Outdoor Classic last week, the track & field teams will travel to Azusa, Calif. for a set of meets. The team will send their mutli-event student-athletes to Mt. SAC Relays/California Invitational Combined Events starting Wednesday. The rest of the squad will compete in the Bryan Clay Invitational starting Thursday. Both events will be held at the Cougar Athletic Stadium on APU's East Campus.
During last week's meet, several Lopes recorded new PRs, conference leading times/marks and one new program record.
Josh Hamberlin continued his strong outdoor season after topping his previous GCU record in the hammer throw. His toss of 54.38 meters broke his previous record by a whopping 1.36 meters to extend his lead in the Western Athletic Conference.
Also at throws,
Nyomi Mosley earned his first collegiate conference honor after being named WAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week for her performance at the AZ Outdoor Classic. The redshirt from Sedona, Ariz., placed first in the hammer with a throw of 52.96m. Already with the WAC lead, her mark was the third-best mark in the conference this outdoor season. In the discus, she placed third with a new PR of 43.74m to rank fifth in the WAC.
On the track,
Ryan Girk put on a show in the 100m and 200m. The junior from Phoenix, Ariz. ran a 10.57 and 21.08 seconds in the 100m and 200m, respectively. Already leading the WAC in the 200m, he distanced himself from the pack to put him nearly a half second ahead of all conference sprinters.
