The Grand Canyon men's and women's track & field teams are set to compete in the Don Kirby Tailwind Open hosted by New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. on Saturday, April 1. This will mark the Lopes' third consecutive trip to the Don Kirby Tailwind Open and fifth time in program history.
Saturday's meet will also mark the 21st meet GCU has compete in Albuquerque since the program's inception in 2011. New Mexico will host 10 teams including; Adams State, Eastern New Mexico, Fort Lewis, New Mexico Highlands, WAC-rival New Mexico State, UTEP, West Texas A&M and Western State.
Fresh off a successful weekend in San Diego for the 39th annual Aztec Invitational, the Lopes will look to continue the momentum into Albuquerque. At the Aztec Invitational, three Lopes shattered school records and six recorded an additional Western Athletic Conference leading times/marks.
At throws,
Nyomi Mosley broke the school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 53.23m (174-8). During distance events,
Sam Proctor followed with a new GCU record in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:35.05. True freshman,
Yarithza Soto, closed out the record breaking performances in San Diego by just edging the GCU record in the 800m with a time of 2:13.30. Her time broke the program record by just .20 seconds.
