The Grand Canyon men's and women's track & field teams are set to compete in the 39th annual Aztec Invitational from March 24-25. Hosted by No. 25 San Diego State, the two-day meet will take place at the AzTrack at SDSU Sports Deck while all throwing events occur at UC San Diego.
The event will include 17 collegiate programs and numerous club, National team and unattached, including open, Paralympic, high school and invitational to host nearly 2,500 athletes and 102 teams for the weekend. No stranger to the Aztec Invitational, the Lopes will compete in the event for the fourth-consecutive year.
Grand Canyon is fresh off a successful Willie Williams Classic performance as 12 Lopes recorded conference-best performances. At throws, Josh Hamberlin and
Jesse Newman crushed the previous program outdoor records in the hammer (53.02m) and javelin (62.85m), respectively.
The Lopes will look to continue their successful outdoor season in San Diego with tough competition in No. 25 San Diego State, Air Force, BYU, Colorado, San Diego, UC San Diego, UNLV, USC, Wisconsin and WAC-rival Utah Valley.
