CORAL SPRINGS, Florida – Under first year head coach
Lauren Giesecke, the Grand Canyon women's golf program found success not only on the golf course but also in the classroom. GCU's
Kylie Fong and
Deanna Salvatori were named All-American Scholars by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA).
"I am so proud of Deanna and Kylie for their impressive accomplishments inside and out of the classroom," Giesecke said. "This award shows the amount of hard work and dedication they have put into their studies and golf."
In order for Fong and Salvatori to receive the prestigious honor, players had to post a minimum grade point average of 3.50. The Lopes had six All-WAC Academic honorees this past season and GCU has its first two WGCA All-America since being a member of Division I and its first All-American since 2013.
This is the second postseason honor Salvatori has received after being named Second Team All-WAC. Salvatori finished in 13th place at the WAC Championships while Fong has two top-20 finishes in the Spring and was key to GCU defeating Wyoming in a dual match at the first ever GCU Golf Course dual match.
"At GCU we stress the importance of taking care of our class work," Giesecke added. "We have a great academic staff that is always there to support and provide guidance to our student-athletes."
Giesecke and her staff have stressed in the importance of not only working hard on the course but also in the classroom and it has shown as this year's squad had the highest team GPA of any GCU team.
