CORAL SPRINGS, Florida– The awards continue to file in for Grand Canyon women's golf as
Samantha Barker has been named an All-American Scholar by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA).
"Our program stresses the importance of not only working hard on the golf course but also working hard in the classroom and Samantha exemplifies what we want in a student-athlete," head coach
Lauren Giesecke said. "I am extremely proud of how hard she has worked in the classroom and this award and her grade point average shows her dedication to her school work."
In order for Barker to receive the prestigious honor, she had to post a minimum grade point average of 3.50 and the junior went above and beyond finishing the school year with a 3.82 GPA. The Lopes had five All-WAC Academic honorees this past season and Barker joins
Kylie Fong and
Deanna Salvatori as GCU's first three WGCA All-American Scholars since being a member of Division I and its first All-American since 2013.
During the Fall, Barker competed in five tournaments with two Top-25 finishes in the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational and in the Cougar Cup hosted by Washington State. In her one tournament during the Spring season, the native of Highlands Ranch, Colo. placed 25th at the first annual GCU Invitational at the GCU Golf Course.
"As a program we are happy and proud of our student-athletes that take advantage of our great academic staff at GCU," Giesecke added. "At GCU we do the best to provide a support system for our student-athletes on the field and in the classroom and I am proud of Samantha's dedication in the classroom."
Giesecke and her staff have stressed the importance of not only working hard on the course but also in the classroom and it has shown as this year's squad had the highest team GPA of any GCU team.
