PHOENIX
– The Grand Canyon men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned multiple Scholar All-America honors by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for the spring 2016 semester.
The men's team achieved a combined 3.18 GPA during the spring and the women's team GPA of 3.65 tied for the sixth-best among NCAA Division I programs. The two GCU teams were among 658 swimming and diving programs across the nation to earn a grade point average of 3.00 or higher, the eligibility requirement for CSCAA Scholar All-America Team selection.
This marks the 13
th-straight semester that both the men's and women's teams have been recognized by the CSCAA for Scholar All-America honors.
"We stress the importance of academics from day one and I am very grateful for the efforts of our athletes and our Athlete Development staff for their hard work in accomplishing our goals," Head Coach
Steve Schaffer said.
In addition to team awards, three female students and four male students were individually selected as CSCAA Scholar All-Americans as a result of their academic achievement in the spring semester.
Estela Davis Ortiz,
Iryna Glavnyk,
Jovanna Koens,
Mazen El Kamash,
Youssef El Kamash,
Jacob Lambros and
Mark Nikolaev earned a 3.50 GPA or higher and participated in the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. All seven student-athletes also achieved a "B" time standard or competed at a regional or zone qualifying meet to be named among the Honorable Mentioned selections.
Lambros is also among 218 Scholar All-Americans who, as of June 12, have qualified for the United States Olympic Team Trials.
"It is a great accomplishment for us to have seven of our swimmers receive this individual recognition because it requires high level accomplishments in both the pool and the classroom," added Schaffer. "For both our men and women to once again get the team recognition shows that we continue to build a team that is aiming for the top of Division I."
