Haughian Gets Team-Best 13th Victory

Grand Canyon lost its final home dual of the season, but won the final match.

In a 33-3 loss to Cal Poly at GCU Arena Sunday, GCU finished the night off with its lone win. In the 285 bout, redshirt-junior Marcus Haughian defeated the Mustangs' Nicolas Johnson 2-0.

Haughian picked up his team-best 13th win of the season. He is 3-3 since moving up to the 285-class from 197. Haughian picked up a riding-time point in the second period and added an escape early in the third for the decision.

"Marcus is a 100 percent fighter and is 100 percent about getting better," said GCU assistant coach Brian Stith. "We respect and appreciate that out of him.

"The more experience he gets (at 285) the better he will get. It is a different type of wrestling at heavyweight than it was for him at 197."

Haughian moved up to the 285/Heavyweight class at the Tracy Borah Duals (Jan. 10). He is 13-15 overall on the season.

GCU had a few other close decisions, but unfortunately for the Lopes they went the Mustangs way. At 149, Austin Solari suffered a 7-6 loss to Blake Kastl. AJ Salazar, at 133, and Uzo Owuama, at 141, both lost three-point decisions. Salazar was on the short end of a 6-3 count to Victor Trujillo. Owuama, one of four true freshmen in the Lopes lineup, lost 3-0 to Colton Schilling. It was the second time Owuama and Schilling had met this season. Owuama lost by fall to Schilling at the Roadrunner Open in November.

"We were in a couple matches, and after taking our lumps this season, it's a step in the right direction in becoming a winner," added Stith.

The Lopes wrap up the dual portion of the season with matches on the road later this week. GCU travels to George Mason Thursday and Lock Haven on Friday. Both contests start at 5 p.m. Arizona Time. Check back to www.gculopes.com for any available live links to the matches.
