Lopes Open Fall Season with Two Rounds in Utah

GCU currently in eighth place at Hobble Creek Fall Classic
The Grand Canyon University women's golf team opened play today at their first of five fall tournaments, the Hobble Creek Fall Classic that is being co-hosted by BYU and Utah Valley at the Hobble Springs Golf Course in Springville, Utah. The 54-hole tournament saw two rounds of action today, and the Antelopes are currently in eighth place with a 36-hole total of 47-over 615.
The Lopes carded a 19-over 303 through the first 18 holes and a 28-over 312 in the second round.
"I am happy with the excellent play by freshman Amy Ruelas, shooting a 73 in the first round of her first college tournament," said head coach Don Powers. "She tied GCU standout Charlotte Jaengkit, who continues to impress me with her amazing consistency."
The second round saw the tournament face a delay due to lightning near the course. Heavy rain and wind also impacted play.
New Mexico State leads the 12-team field at nine-over 577. Santa Clara, at 22-over 590, is one stroke ahead of BYU in third place.
GCU is just six strokes out of fifth place, which is held by Southern Utah and Montana State. Weber State is in fourth place at 39-over 607.
Charlotte Jaengkit, who last season led the squad with 10 top-10 finishes, is in ninth place with a two-round score of five-over 147. The senior tied for the third-best Par 5 scoring (-3) and had 22 pars on the day. Jaengkit also collected an eagle.
Kelcey Tate is tied for 27th place at 11-over 153, one stroke ahead of teammate Amy Ruelas who is tied for 30th. Ruelas collected seven birdies in today's action, tied for the third-most among all tournament competitors, while Tate's 24 birdies were also third-best.
Emily Kaye is tied for 52nd with a 36-hole score of 19-over 161, while Kennedie Montoya is tied for 55th place three strokes behind her teammate.
The Hobble Creek Fall Classic concludes tomorrow with a final round slated to get underway at 7:30 a.m. (Arizona time). Fans can find a complete recap along with results by visiting www.gculopes.com.
