The Invitational, which will consist of 106 swimmers from eight teams, begins today and runs through Tuesday. GCU along with Western Kentucky, Incarnate Word, BYU, Rice, Rider, Iona and Campbell will be the participating schools.
"We are excited to be part of creating swimming's answer to the NIT Basketball Tournament," said GCU head swimming coach Steve Schaffer. "Our kids will get to swim against some very fast competition from teams we have not competed against before. While the meet is small this year, the quality is good and I am certain this meet has a very bright future. Years from now, we will be able to look back and say we were there at the beginning."

"One of the things we need to able to learn to do as a team as we look forward to being eligible to compete in the NCAA Tournament is to be able to turn around from the physical and emotional fatigue of the WAC Conference Championships and getting ready to compete at NCAAs three to four weeks later," added Schaffer. "This meet allows us to do that and to create the expectations that we can be fast in both meets. This will be a very good way for our kids to develop the expectation of moving on to the next level. One more opportunity to teach, one more opportunity to learn, and an opportunity realize that we can do better."
The men finished fourth and the women fifth at the WAC Championships three weeks ago, earning high praise with some impressive swims.
Hannah Kastigar was named the conference Freshman of the Year and was also the 400-IM champion.
Iegor Lytvenok took home a pair of titles, winning the 200-IM and 200 back. He would have qualified for the NCAAs with his 400-IM time.
Iryna Glavnyk rounded out the individual winners for the Antelopes, taking the top step in the 200 back.
As has been the case for quite a few seasons, the GCU relay squads raced to wins in the women's 200 free, 200 medley and 400 medley relays. They will once again be a force this weekend in Rockwall.
Pictures and videos will be available on the "Grand Canyon University Swimming" Facebook page. Fans are encouraged to "like" the page for up to minute highlights and information on the Antelopes.
