The Grand Canyon University men's and women's swim teams are set to embark on their first-ever trip to the Western Athletic Conference Championships, slated for Feb. 26-March 1 at the Palo Alto College Aquatic Center in San Antonio, Texas.
A number of school records were broken throughout the course of the 2013-14 season, while freshman
Hannah Kastigar, sophomore
Iegor Lytvenok, and sophomore
Illya Glazunov are each two-time WAC Swimmer of the Week honorees.
Both squads are coming off of impressive seasons, most notably that the men's team went undefeated in dual meets. Following their strong swims during their inaugural Division I campaign, the Antelopes boast some of the top times in several events among WAC swimmers.
Jovanna Koens owns the second-fastest mark in the women's 50-free at 23.38 seconds. On the men's side of the event, Glazunov also posted the second-best mark at 19.95 seconds.
Koens and teammate Kastigar currently rank second and third in the 100-free with times of 51.06 and 51.33 seconds, respectively. Glazunov is third for the men after clocking in at 44.06 seconds.
Stanislav Saiko owns the third-fastest 500-free time at 4:27.05.
Newcomer
Iryna Glavnyk, who joined the squad at the beginning of the semester, boasts the second-best time in the women's 100-backstroke at 55.27 seconds. For the men, Lytvenok's time of 48.61 seconds in third-fastest.
Glavynk is also among the top swimmers in the 200-backstroke, owning the second-fastest mark of 1:59.82.
Lytvenok holds the title of the fastest man in the 200-backstroke this season with a time of 1:44.16. He is followed by teammate
John Feely at 1:46.88.
Tom Wahlers currently ranks third among WAC swimmers in the men's 100-breaststroke with a time of 55.36 seconds.
The butterfly events brought many individual victories for the 'Lopes this season, as both Kastigar (54.49) and
Ivan Nechunaev (47.50) can claim the fastest swims so far. The same holds true for Kastigar in the 200-yard length, as she sits atop those rankings at 1:58.06. Nechunaev has the third-best time in that event for the men (1:47.67).
Kastigar's swims in the IM events have also brought her success this season, as she owns the best time in the 400-IM (4:15.92) and the second-fastest time in the 200-yard length at 2:00.99. Lytvenok and Nechunaev are first and third on the men's side of the 200-IM with marks of 1:45.85 and 1:47.89, respectively. Lytvenok is second in the 400-IM at 3:48.40.
In relay events, the 'Lopes hold a number of top times including the women's 200-free relay team that sits atop the conference rankings at 1:33.29. The men have the second-best time at 1:19.31.
In the 400-free relay, the men and women rank second with times of 2:56.12 and 3:25.33, respectively. Both are also second in the 800-yard distance.
In the medley relay events, the men have the second-fastest time in the 200-yard length at 1:28.49. The women are third at 1:44.58. Both also rank third in the 400-medley relay event.
