The Grand Canyon University women’s swimming team dropped a tightly contested dual this afternoon to Division I New Mexico, 131-122, in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Antelopes were winners in six individual events and also took first in the 200 free relay.
“This was a tough trip for our women,” said head coach Steve Schaffer. “To fly in late last night and then race today at a high altitude location is tough to do. Add on top of that a well-coached opponent and highly motivated D-I opponent on their Senior Day and it is even tougher. Our women did a very good job of racing and swam quite a few unrested season best times. I am very pleased with how tough they were and I think all of the women will benefit from this meet experience when we go to Grand Junction (also at altitude) for the RMAC Championships.”
Inha Kotsur was a double winner today, taking first in the 500 free (5:11.01) and 1000 free (10:36.99).
The Antelopes took the top-four spots in the 100 free, an event that was won by
Catherine Polito (54.68). The ‘Lopes took the top-three spots in the 100 back, with
Dora Plestina taking first (1:01.41).
Rebecca Coan (200 fly – 2:09.07) and
Mychala Lynch (100 fly – 56.91) were also winners. Coan and Lynch teamed with Polito and
Stacey Rudman to close out the meet with the victory in the 200 free relay (1:37.46).
Both the men’s and women’s squads will be in action on Jan. 19, when they will host Biola at the Brophy Complex Pool in Phoenix, Ariz. That meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
