The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s swimming teams wrapped up the regular season portion of their schedule with a sweep of Biola at the Brophy Complex Pool in Phoenix, Ariz. The women won 163-83, while the men cruised to a 183-54 victory.
“This was a meet where our swimmers could choose to swim off events just to race something different, or to sharpen up events they are preparing for the RMAC and NCAA championships,” said head coach Steve Schaffer. “We have been working very hard and I was pleasantly surprised at the speed that many of our swimmers showed. Overall it was a very good showing.”
The day was a tribute to nine departing seasons as they competed for the last time at home. The seniors on the men’s side that were honored were
Eetu Karvonen,
Richie Krzyzanowski,
Kyle Shores,
Buddy Turner and
Jordan Wagner. The women paid tribute to
Jaclyn Branning,
Amy Hammann,
Victoria Heron and
Mychala Lynch.
“This was our Senior Recognition Day as our last home meet of the year and we were able to give the kids who will be ending their college careers this year a good send off, and many of them stepped up with some really super swims,” added Schaffer.
Karvonen secured the win and an NCAA A cut in the 100 breast with a 54.53. He won the 200 breast with a 2:01.83, good enough for a B standard.
Michael Branning (20.90) and Shores (20.98) went 1-2, respectively, in the 50 free. Each earned an NCAA B mark.
Shores also took first in the 100 fly with a B swim 50.29. Teammate
Alexandr Dmitriyenko also had a B cut swim, finishing second with a 50.98 in the same event.
Lynch, the defending NCAA champion in the 100 fly, won that event today with a B Cut swim of 57.35.
The Antelopes are now off until the RMAC Championships which will be contested from Feb. 13-16 in Grand Junction, Colo. The women took first in last season’s championship.
“We have one more week of hard work before we begin to rest everyone who has not yet qualified for NCAA’s so we can try to get them qualified at the RMAC meet,” said Schaffer. “Those who have already secured their spots to the NCAA’s will train hard up to the RMAC meet and then begin resting for NCAA. We have been working all year for these last two championship meets. I think we have some great swimming yet to come.”
