The Grand Canyon University women’s golf team claimed first place at the GCU Women’s Fall Invitational at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield, Ariz. The Antelopes “A” squad shot a two-round total of 27-over 603.
Oklahoma Christian and Cal State San Marcos finished in a second-place tie after shooting a 32-over 608. Academy of Art took fourth with a 37-over 613.
The ‘Lopes “B” squad finished ninth in the 17-team invitational after shooting a 48-over 624.
The tournament was the first for Grand Canyon after finishing a school-best third at the 2012 NCAA Championships in Louisville, Kentucky.
GCU’s Charlotte Jaengkit and Oklahoma Christian’s Anna Arrese Cortadellas were co-medalists for the invitational after 36-hole totals of 2-under 142. The pair posted the only below-par scores of the invitational. Jaengkit fired eight birdies and shot a 5-under on the par 5’s.
Cassidy Sanchez, playing for the Antelopes “B” squad, finished in tie for fifth with a 4-over 148. She shot a 72 today after her opening round 76. Tiffany Hewetson placed in a tie for 14
th after carding an 8-over 152. Kelcey Tate wrapped up GCU’s top-20 finishers after completing the invitational with a 10-over 154.
Grand Canyon will return to action when they travel to Bellingham, Wash. for the Western Washington Invitational from Oct. 8-9. The invitational will be played at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
